Papier-mâché was introduced to Kashmir in the 14th century by Sufi saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani from Persia. The craft involves two stages: Sakhtsazi (shaping the mashed paper pulp in wooden moulds) and Naqqashi (intricate painting by master artists). Decorated with the 'Hazara Gulzar' motif featuring miniature roses, nightingales, and gold dust, then coated with multiple layers of crystal-clear amber lacquer for waterproof durability.
